SPIEF in 2021
With the easing of coronavirus restrictions, it became possible to hold the St. Petersburg Economic Forum - the first and largest business event in Russia.
The SPIEF culture festival has become traditional for the forum. The main concert of the festival — «From Classics to Rock» — took place on Palace Square. It is a dedication to all medical workers who have been fighting the coronavirus infection on the front lines since the beginning of the pandemic.
First to perform that day was the Italian Symphony Orchestra of the Petruzzelli Theatre, followed by the band «Night Snipers» led by Diana Arbenina. Our studio team was among the organizers of the performance broadcast.
About the tasks
Our task was to provide filming for the IMAG broadcast of the band «Night Snipers» — all images from the cameras were transmitted to the director's video mixer, and then to three screens installed on the stage of Palace Square.
We had only a week to prepare the broadcast — the order was urgent and very important. Together with the director, we drew up a scheme for placing cameras on the site, with video engineers — a scheme for connecting equipment and came up with a solution for «wireless broadcast», and our project manager was involved in selecting the team.
Preparation of the broadcast
We arrived at Palace Square early in the morning: we started assembling equipment. In 4 hours, we laid 400 meters of cable, installed five cameras and ensured signal transmission from them to the video mixer of the «Night Snipers» team.
As a result, our team consisted of: five camera operators and two video engineers.
Filmingprocess
We thought out the scheme for placing camera operators in advance. Two cameras were on a pedestal — for wide shots, two more shot the performance handheld on the stage itself, and one stood at the foot of the stage to capture close-ups of the artists. This scheme allowed us to show the event in a certain dynamic, which depends, among other things, on the musical accompaniment.
On Palace Square, we worked together with the team of the St. Petersburg TV channel, who recorded the first part of the concert and provided us with bird's-eye views.
One of the most difficult creative tasks on site was handheld shooting directly on the stage of Palace Square. As a technical solution, we used the Vaxis video sender, which allows transmitting a video signal «wirelessly»: in Full HD quality and with a high frame rate.
