Preparation for the broadcast

The optimal preparation time for a large-scale online broadcast is 2-3 months. We talked about this in the case study on organizing the Trends of Beauty conference.

At the end of 2021, managers of Elena Vaenga contacted the studio, wanting to conduct an online broadcast of her concert. The goal was to allow people who cannot come to St. Petersburg to watch the performance of their favorite singer and feel the concert atmosphere.

For the artist's managers, this was the first experience of organizing online broadcasts, so we took on most of the organizational tasks. We immediately defined the work plan:

  1. Inspection of the venue where the concert will take place
  2. Assembling a team for the task
  3. Choosing a platform for the online broadcast
  4. Shooting plan and equipment connection
  5. Organization of viewer support service

Venue inspection

The concert took place at the BKZ 'Oktyabrsky'. This is one of the largest concert venues in St. Petersburg, seating 3,727 people: 37 rows of seats in the stalls, and another 16 on the balcony. In addition to the stage, there is also an orchestra pit.

Such space allows a large filming crew to spread out and use different angles to make the broadcast more dynamic and exciting. For the viewer watching the concert at home, the quality of the filming is very important.

Assembling the team

For each project, the studio assembles a separate team. It includes only employees who have already worked on similar tasks. So, the team included 9 operators, a director, and a broadcast engineer.

Choosing the platform

There are many platforms for conducting online broadcasts, which are divided into open and closed. We wrote about the features of each here.

It was important for the artist's managers that the platform met several requirements: the ability to pay for access to the broadcast (tickets were sold for the online concert), support high video quality, and handle an influx of users.

Facecast met all the requirements, so we chose this platform.

Shooting plan and equipment connection

The final plan was made the day before the concert. On that day, we conducted a test broadcast and discussed with the organizers which angles and shots to keep, and which to change or remove.

The broadcast used 11 cameras: two static ones on stage for a general plan, another two movable on stabilizers. One operator worked on stage filming close-ups of the musicians, and another worked in the audience.

By the way, this project became the largest in terms of the amount of equipment used, breaking the record of 2021, when our team worked on the broadcast of the band 'Night Snipers' as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

Due to the large number of viewers, we needed to create online support to help users connect to the platform and solve technical problems.

Viewers wrote in special Telegram and WhatsApp chats, and also called a dedicated phone number. All issues were promptly resolved by the studio staff, and there were no complaints about the video quality. This is also confirmed by the feedback from Elena Vaenga's managers.

Anastasia Goryachkina

Artist Manager

Thank you to Denis Zolotov Studio for the video shooting and online broadcast of the concert. We received many positive reviews from viewers who are satisfied with the quality of sound and picture! During three hours of filming, the broadcast never interrupted. The day before the online broadcast, the guys thought out the camera placement scheme at the venue, took into account wishes for handheld shooting on stage, and drew up an equipment connection scheme. The team consisted of ten operators, a director, a duty technician, and a technical support specialist for viewers. They did an excellent job. We will be happy to continue cooperating with the studio.

Results

The online concert also turned out to be economically beneficial. The cost of organizing the online concert has already recouped itself several times over. Currently, the managers are discussing with the studio the possibility of a repeat broadcast in autumn 2022.
